What coastal humidity does to a cabinet finish
Every kitchen is a hard environment for a coating. A kitchen ten minutes from the Gulf is harder.
Cabinet finishes do not fail because someone picked the wrong color. They fail at the bond — the point where the coating meets the surface underneath it. Salt-laden humidity attacks that bond from both directions: moisture works in at any unsealed edge, and a coating that stays slightly soft never fully stops absorbing it. What you see months later is chipping along door edges, peeling around the sink and dishwasher, and a tacky feel near the stove where cooking grease was never fully removed before priming.
An inland kitchen can forgive a skipped step for a couple of years. In Clearwater it usually surfaces inside of one. That is the real reason the cheapest quote is expensive here — the margin in an underbid comes out of preparation, and preparation is exactly what coastal air tests.

A bonding primer matched to your specific cabinet material goes on next, then a KCMA-certified topcoat sprayed with HVLP or airless equipment in a controlled environment. Doors are rehung, hardware reinstalled, alignment checked, and we walk the kitchen with you before we leave.

- They do when the coating is built for it. We use KCMA-certified waterborne cabinet coatings — the standard factory cabinet manufacturers are held to — which cure hard and resist the heat, humidity, and salt air that come with living this close to the Gulf. What does not survive here is consumer-grade wall paint from a hardware store, which softens and releases far faster in coastal humidity than it would inland.
- Can you paint cabinets in a Clearwater Beach condo?
- Yes, and our process suits condos better than most — but there is one thing worth knowing up front. Doors and drawer fronts are removed and sprayed off-site, which takes the large majority of the spray work out of your building entirely. The frames and boxes are sprayed in place, though, and that does create odor in the unit while it happens. We mask and contain the work area and ventilate it, and it is a short window rather than the whole job, but we would rather you hear that from us than discover it on the day. Tell us what your association requires on working hours, elevator use, floor protection, and insurance certificates, and we will plan around it.
- My cabinets are thermofoil and starting to peel. Can they be painted?
- Usually yes — peeling thermofoil is a common job here, not a dead end. Thermofoil is a vinyl film over MDF, and it lifts where heat and steam get behind it, most often beside the oven or the dishwasher. Painting straight over lifted film will not hold, but that rarely means the doors are finished. In most cases we strip the film off the doors entirely and paint the MDF underneath, which takes a finish well and cannot peel the way the vinyl did. On the frames, lifting film is generally re-bonded with adhesive rather than removed. New doors are an option if you want a different style or the substrate underneath has been damaged, but they cost more and are not the default answer. We will tell you which of those you are looking at before you commit to anything.
- What if painting is not the right choice for my kitchen?
- Then we will say so. We assess your cabinets and tell you whether painting, refacing, or replacement actually fits what you have — including when the answer is not the service you called us about. Boxes with water damage or a layout that needs to change are not problems a finish solves. We would rather lose the job than sell you something that will not work.
